Vancation: Facts and Final Thoughts

So here are some facts and stats of trip:
  • Number of days: 15
  • Miles traveled: 3,600
  • States visited: 9 (including Colorado)
  • Number of places we slept: 7
  • Route: Here is a map of the route we drove
  • Prettiest part of the drive: Driving on the 101
  • Most boring part of the drive: Reno to Salt Lake City
  • Shortest drive: Seattle to Portland
  • Longest drive: Denver to Idaho Falls
  • My favorite part of the trip:
    • Emerson: "Camping and being in the kayak on the lake"
    • Reese: "My cousins"
    • Keaton: Sleeping
    • Robert: "Being in a kayak on the lake and driving across the Tacoma Narrows Bridge"
    • Natalie: "Driving on the 101 and being on the beach in Oregon AND visiting the first Starbucks!"
  • Things we couldn't have lived without: the minivan, hand sanitizer, TVs & headphones, Sirius XM radio (a Godsend in Wyoming!), Google Maps and snacks.
  • Biggest surprise: How well the kids did and how many fewer stops we had to make on our long drive days.
  • Number of times we listened to Frozen: Surprisingly never more than once a day!
The kids really did so much better than we could have anticipated they would. All those prizes and activities we bought to give them along the way? Most of them were still in the bag when we got home. We spent time in the car chatting, listening and dancing to music, watching movies, snacking and sleeping. They had great attitudes and a few days into the trip Reese started asking each morning as we got her dressed "Where are we going?" as she knew that the day would hold some type of adventure. Overall there were probably less timeouts and behavior issues than we have at home. They never once asked to go home and when we told Reese we were going home she cried and said "I don't want to go home!!!" Keaton did great in the car. He slept most of the time and only had two half hour stretches of crying on the drive from Reno to Salt Lake City.

Would we do it again? Yes we would! We had a wonderful time, we saw awesome things and we made amazing memories together that we'll have always. We are so grateful to the family and friends that let us visit and we feel blessed that we were able to have the opportunity to take such an amazing vacation.

When we would tell people we were taking this trip most would respond "Wow! That sounds great!" then you'd see their face change as it sank in and they'd ask "Are you taking all the kids?" When we said yes they would say "You're brave!" and I would jokingly respond "Or stupid!" People say you can't do road trips with small children but if you plan correctly and have realistic expectations it's definitely manageable.

Vancation: The Trek Home

We arrived in Reno at dinnertime so our obvious next stop was In N Out Burger to get something to eat. Then we drove to Circus Circus and got checked into our room. Then we took the kids up to the midway to see the little circus performance - a guy that balanced on stacks of metal rings. Robert and I weren't that impressed but the kids thought he was amazing! We let them play some carnival games and then went back to our room to get some sleep. We got up early the next morning and checked out. Though we were only there a short time the kids thought it was cool and it only cost us $39 for the night! I'd call that a win. Fun fact: my mom was born at St. Mary's Hospital in Reno which happened to be across the street from Circus Circus.

We spent Thursday driving east across Nevada making our way to Salt Lake City. We stopped a couple of times to use the restroom and so I could feed Keaton and once to eat lunch at McDonald's (Emerson's pick) in Elko, NV. We arrived at our friends Jamie & Caryn's house just before dinner. They made us a yummy dinner of kabobs and tiramisu. And they had Gummi Bears on DVD which the kids hadn't seen before so they watched that while the adults visited. We got a good night's sleep and then packed up (again!) and headed out of town.

On our way out of town we stopped at Starbucks. I have to say that the Salt Lake City Starbucks is the slowest Starbucks I've seen at 7 am on a Friday! We headed home via Wyoming. We stopped at Little America to let the kids play on the playground while I fed Keaton and we bought sandwiches to eat for lunch. A few hours later we stopped for lunch at the same rest area where we ate lunch the first day of the trip. We got to Fort Collins mid-afternoon and after picking up dinner at Noodles on the way we were home by 6 pm.

When we stopped at Little America this buffalo was by the playground. The kids immediately said "Boo buffalos!"
Photo: We've been wanting to do this trip since we got married 8 years ago. 15 days, 9 states and 3,600 miles later and now we're home. We visited family, saw cool sites and checked things off our bucket list. We made great memories and had fun as a family. The kids were rock stars and did better than we dreamed they would. Emerson was telling us what a fun time he had and Reese was crying when we said we were going home. #vancation #homesweethome #sleepinginourownbeds #teamsudaradventures

Vancation: Cruising on the 101

On Monday, June 23rd we packed up the car again and said our goodbyes to the Stevensons. We were headed to Gold Beach, Oregon but made a stop in Salem for a quick visit with Robert's high school friend Sarah and her three daughters. We met at a local park where the kids played on the playground while the adults chatted. Before we left the park we went for a ride on the carousel. We stopped in Eugene for lunch and as we parked Reese asked "This is Eugene's house?" Ha! After lunch we drove for a couple of hours, made a pit stop, drove for another hour or so and then we were on the 101. The views were breathtaking. I had the camera strap around my neck and was leaning out the window to snap photos. So beautiful! We arrived at my Aunt Kate and Uncle John's house in the late afternoon. We hung out a little and then had nice dinner.

We woke up the next morning, got ready to go and headed down to the beach. Emerson hadn't been to the beach since he was 2 1/2 and we took him to San Diego and Reese hadn't ever been. They were so incredibly excited and immediately started running around at the water's edge. Reese fell in the water early on and then promptly fell again in the sand so she was wet and COVERED in sand. It was so great to see the two of them running around and having fun. It wasn't sunny but it was an okay day and the view was wonderful. We played for an hour or two and then headed back to the house for lunch and naps. After naps went into Gold Beach and checked out the local bookstore. Aunt Kate made some yummy chicken enchiladas for dinner and then we all went to bed.

Wednesday morning we got up early and packed up the van. Our plan was to head south and see some Redwoods on our way to Reno, NV. The night before Aunt Kate and Uncle John decided they would follow us down and join us for the redwoods portion of our drive. We arrived at Jedediah Redwoods State Park mid-morning. Fun fact we learned the night before, this is where they filmed the forest and Ewok scenes for Return of the Jedi. We parked and walked down to the river - what a pretty, pretty place. Then we went for a walk through the forest. It was incredible to be close to such huge trees. The kids were in awe and asking lots of questions along the way. It was handy to be with our aunt and uncle who had worked in the US Forest Service. They were able to answer a lot of questions and offer information. It was such a great experience and something we'll remember forever. We said goodbye to Aunt Kate and Uncle John and loaded back into the van and headed to Reno. It was a really pretty drive out of the redwoods, so lush and pretty. It was on this portion of the drive that Emerson got carsick. Luckily he gave us warning and we were able to help him. Poor guy. Surprisingly this was the only time anyone got car sick! We stopped in Medford, OR for lunch and continued on our way.

Vancation: Next Stop, Portland!

On Thursday, June 19th we woke up and started our drive to Portland, Oregon. It's only a three hour drive which at this point seemed short to us! We arrived at lunch time and headed to the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) which I had heard great things about. We had lunch and then spent the next several hours exploring. It was nice to have a fun kid-friendly activity and a break from the car. The kids really enjoyed it. Emerson's favorite part was the dinosaurs. Reese's favorite part was the water area. She was wearing an apron but then promptly slipped and fell on her bottom which resulted in her shorts soaking wet. She's a klutz just like her mother. This is another stop I'd recommend to families visiting Portland.

We drove to Sherwood, Oregon and arrived at my brother's house late in the afternoon. The kids were beyond excited to see their cousins and next thing we knew they were off playing. We enjoyed a nice dinner on the porch as it was a warm and sunny night.

The next day found us a week into our trip! That morning we headed over to a local farm to pick fresh raspberries. Emerson and Reese loved the outing, especially since they were with their cousins. After lunch and naps my brother Matt came home from work and he, Robert, Emerson and Kolby headed to Mt. Hood. Our nephew Kolby's birthday is in June and each year since his first birthday Matt and Windy have taken him camping at Mt. Hood. When we planned our trip the weekend we'd be with them happened to be this year's camping weekend and they were nice enough to invite us to tag along. Since Reese is potty training, Keaton was 9 weeks old and I was 9 weeks post c-section and my RA had just come back I knew we wouldn't be up for camping. So Windy, Kaya, Reese, Keaton and I stayed at their house another night. We watched Frozen, went out for a delicious Mexican dinner and had some girl time.

The guys stopped and had dinner on the way up to Mt. Hood. They set up camp, built a fire and made smores. Emerson loved sleeping in a tent with his daddy.

Saturday morning the girls and Keaton got up early and drove up to the campsite. We went down to the lake where we had Kolby's birthday celebration and he opened his presents. The kids loved Kolby's birthday cake which entailed each kid taking a handful of red velvet cake and putting it in the back of a toy dump truck. Then they each took a turn adding toppings - various kinds of candy, chocolate syrup, etc. Once it was all mixed up Kolby put a scoop on each plate. The kids thought it was so awesome! The rest of the day was spent down by the lake fishing and kayaking. My brother Matt took Emerson out in a kayak and he took to paddling like a fish to water. He paddled behind my brother for an hour then came in and switched to a smaller kayak that he took out by himself and paddled for another hour.

Emerson loved kayaking!

For dinner we cooked hot dogs and sausages over the fire and then made smores. The kids had only been camping at a campground outside of Fort Collins once for Reese and twice for Emerson so they thought this new experience was great. They both thoroughly enjoyed peeing in the woods, Reese "Mama, I peepee in the potty in the woods!" After dinner I headed to a nearby hotel with Reese and Keaton.

Emerson & Robert on a walk

Sunday morning Reese, Keaton and I got up, checked out of the hotel and headed back to the campsite. We spent the morning down at the lake fishing, the kids played and then Robert took both Emerson and Reese out for quick rides in the kayak before we drove back home. In the afternoon we watched the US/Portugal World Cup game, played in the backyard, and had some pizza.

It was so wonderful spending time with Matt, Windy, Kolby & Kaya. It's so great when we can get the kids together and watch them play with their cousins. And it was nice that the Stevensons got to meet Keaton. It was a great visit!

Vancation: The Evergreen State

We woke up early the morning of Monday, June 16th and hit the road. Our next stop? University Place, WA outside of Tacoma. We spent the morning driving across Big Sky Country and we also passed through Coeur d'Alene, Idaho which is BEAUTIFUL and got added to our Places-To-Visit-On-A-Future-Trip list.  We stopped inside of Washington for a picnic lunch however it was windy and super chilly so we ate in the van, Reese "we're eating in the van?!?!" Flexibility and going with the flow definitely happened a lot on the trip. This day's drive was one of the prettiest along our journey. Lush and green and relaxing. We arrived at my Aunt Kay & Uncle Blaine's house around 4 pm. Uncle Blaine took Robert and the kids for a little walk down the street to check out the neighborhood orchard then we had margaritas and a yummy grilled chicken dinner.

Tuesday we got up and going and then headed to the Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium. We spent the morning walking around and checking out the animals. The kids enjoyed the aquarium where Emerson and Robert got to touch sting rays, Reese was hesitant so stayed in mama's arms and just looked. They also had sharks which the kids thought were awesome. There are five very cool tigers in exhibits where you can get very close. Seeing their stripes up close was amazing. Another highlight were the walruses including ET who is a 32 year old male walrus that weighs 3,200 pounds. We hadn't seen a walrus that big before! The zoo also has a cool playground area for kids where Emerson and Reese ran around before we headed home. It is a great zoo and I'd definitely recommend it to families visiting the area.

On our way back from the zoo Robert had a request. He wanted to drive across the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. For those that don't know, the original Tacoma Narrows Bridge collapsed violently in

After getting in some much needed naps Aunt Kay took us to a local park near a beach. The kids were able to fly their new kites from Aaron and Ashley for a little bit. They hadn't flown kites before and the conditions plus the kid friendly kites made for some successful kite flying. We walked down to the beach where the kids searched for crabs under the rocks. Aunt Kay also told us about a good luck tradition. You find a rock with a continuous white line around it, stand with your back to the ocean and using your right hand throw the rock over your left shoulder. So of course we had to do it!

Family Photo Op
Since Aunt Kay finished her school year on Tuesday (she's a kindergarten teacher) she was our official tour guide on Wednesday. And since she's lived in the area her entire life she was the perfect person to show us around. We drove to Seattle to check out the Ballard Locks and salmon ladder. There weren't any boats going through when we arrived and 10 minutes after we got there they announced they would be closing the bridge to the salmon ladder within 15 minutes for the rest of the day! So we hurried over to check out the salmon ladder and we were in luck! The kids got to see a few fish in the ladder before we headed back over the bridge just as it was closing. Unfortunately there still weren't any boats in the locks so we went into the visitor's center to watch a video about the history of the locks before heading out. It was a short visit but obviously left an impact because when we were coming downstairs this morning Reese said "We saw a fish ladder." So she was paying attention!

Next we headed to downtown Seattle and Pike Place Market. Obviously we took a photo by the sign! Then we stopped and checked out the infamous Gum Wall. Our family rule is that you can't have gum until you're 3. It's my opinion that children younger than that are not capable of chewing gum and just end up swallowing it so I don't even bother with it before 3. Now I know what you're saying, doesn't a 3 year old swallow gum too? Yes, yes they do. But it's not as often. So we arrive at the gum wall and obviously I had to break my own rule and let Reese have a piece of gum. We chewed some gum and added it to the wall for a quick photo op. It was only as we were walking away that I turned to Robert and said "Do you realize that we just gave Reese gum for the first time then told her to take it out of her mouth and put it on a wall? That maybe wasn't our best idea." This then resulted in a short lecture about how this was a special thing and we don't EVER put gum on a wall. Ha!
The mandatory shot

We headed into the market where Aunt Kay was a godsend. She took us to all her favorite stops, first up fresh donuts. There's a stall with a little machine that makes fresh mini donuts! As the warm donuts come out the workers flavor them - plain, cinnamon, chocolate icing and then put them in a bag to enjoy. It was the perfect treat and the kids loved it. We took our picture by the famous pig then stopped for bite to eat. After lunch was the moment I had been waiting for. When we started planning the trip I told Robert "We HAVE to go to the first Starbucks when we're in Seattle." Seeing as I'm a bit of a Starbucks fanatic (don't judge me, we all have our vice!) this was a mandatory stop. So we headed down and got in the ever present line. It was smaller than I expected but I was beyond thrilled to be there. Aunt Kay treated Robert and I to lattes and I bought a couple of mugs ("I can't NOT buy something!") while we were there. I think my face says it all don't you? Worth the wait in line.

We headed back to the car and went to catch the ferry to Bainbridge Island. The kids had never been on a ferry before and they LOVED it. And Robert had only walked onto one, never driven before. We parked our car and headed above deck where we had a great view of Seattle as we left it behind us. It was so pretty and a fun experience for us all. Back on land, the kids napped as we drove home. Robert took the kids to play at a local park and then we had dinner. After dinner Uncle Blaine and Aunt Kay took us to do some sightseeing in Tacoma. First up was Stadium High School which used to be a grand hotel before they turned it into a high school. It is where my Aunt Kay's mom went to high school and one of her niece's teaches there now. It's also the school they used to film the movie 10 Things I Hate About You. Next we went to the see the Chihuly Bridge of Glass at the Museum of Glass. It was really cool to go for a walk on a warm summer night and see the pretty glass. I was surprised because Reese seemed the most interested in the glass. She loved standing underneath it and staring up above at all the colors.
